Trevor Bauer Signs with Yokohama DeNA BayStars

Former Cy Young Winner Joins Japanese League

Bauer to Pitch for BayStars in 2023

Former Cy Young winner Trevor Bauer has signed a one-year contract with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). The deal, which the team officially announced Tuesday morning in Japan, is expected to pay Bauer $4 million.

"I can't tell you how excited I am to be here," Bauer said at a press conference. "I've always wanted to play in Japan, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to join the BayStars."

Bauer is in Japan on a one-year deal that could let him prove himself and return to the majors, where he was unable to find work this season. The 31-year-old right-hander was suspended for two seasons by Major League Baseball (MLB) in April after being accused of sexual assault. Bauer has denied the allegations.

The BayStars are hoping that Bauer can help them improve on their 5th-place finish in the Central League last season. The team has not won a Japan Series title since 1998.

Bauer is a two-time All-Star and was the 2020 NL Cy Young Award winner. He has a career record of 83-69 with a 3.79 ERA in nine seasons with the Cleveland Indians, Cincinnati Reds, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Bauer is expected to make his debut for the BayStars on April 1 against the Tokyo Yakult Swallows.
