Union Of Independent Sovereign States Is Called

The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Union

From Triumph to Collapse

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), a colossal and enigmatic empire, emerged from the ashes of the Russian Empire after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917.

Gorbachev's Reforms

In the late 1980s, the USSR faced severe economic and political challenges. Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, embarked on an ambitious program of reforms known as perestroika (restructuring) and glasnost (openness).

However, Gorbachev's reforms had unintended consequences. The relaxation of political controls led to the rise of nationalist sentiments in various republics, ultimately contributing to the disintegration of the Soviet Union.

Territorial Disintegration

In 1991, after a failed coup attempt, the Soviet Union was dissolved following the signing of the Belavezha Accords. The constituent republics declared independence, forming 15 separate states.

The collapse of the Soviet Union had far-reaching geopolitical implications, reshaping the world order and leaving a lasting legacy on global affairs.
